Allegra Print & Imaging Goes “Green” with Products and Practices
Allegra Print & Imaging Goes “Green” with Products and Practices and New Designation of Washtenaw Waste Knot Partner
SALINE, MI – October 27, 2008 – It’s not easy being green, especially in the printing industry. Still, Allegra Print & Imaging in Saline has joined the ranks of environmentally friendly businesses with the addition of the Washtenaw Waste Knot designation.
“We’ve always been conscious of the challenges the printing industry faces when it comes to taking care of the environment,” said Joe DiMauro, general manager of Allegra Print & Imaging in Saline. “Being aware isn’t enough for us; we’ve made the commitment to more earth-friendly practices.”
The Waste Knot program was developed by Washtenaw County Department of Planning and Environment to increase waste reduction and recycling activities. Allegra has been recognized for their existing environmental commitment by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality – Michigan Great Printer Project.
The vision of a “paperless” office is a noble one, but it is neither practical nor doable for most small businesses. While technology has moved many files from cabinets to hard drives, print communications materials for internal and external audiences are here to stay.
When planning printing projects, DiMauro recommends considering the following:
- Use recycled paper. Request that your project be printed on paper with a high level of post consumer content.
- Specify soy-based inks and coatings. They do not have the toxins associated with petroleum-based inks that are released into the environment.
- Plan print projects. By scheduling multiple jobs for one press run, you not only save money on set-up charges but reduce waste.
- Digital printing. For smaller quantities, digital printing may be the right choice for reducing waste materials.
“We want businesses to know that there are several ways in which we can be more environmentally responsible, and that these ‘greener’ solutions will support their print communications programs,” said DiMauro.
Allegra works with their paper suppliers on environmental stewardship and provides paper choices of totally chlorine free and elemental chorine free. They use direct-to-plate printing processes, emulsion aggregation toner and print management programs. Over 36 tons of paper and 2.5 tons of cardboard were recycled by Allegra in 2007.
Allegra Print & Imaging of Saline provides full range of marketing services for area businesses including printing, mailing services, fulfillment, promotional products and graphic design. They offer traditional and digital solutions, offset printing, short-run affordable color with options for 5th color and aqueous coating. They can help plan and execute projects to meet most budgets. A branch office is located in Madison Heights, Mich. servicing the Detroit area. For more information, please contact Allegra at (734) 944-1404 or visit their Web site at www.allegra.net.
